The entertainment world has been rocked by the tragic deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, after the couple were found dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14.
Authorities responded to a medical emergency call at 3:38 PM local time and later confirmed both Rob, 78, and Michele, 68, had died from stab wounds.
Law enforcement quickly classified the incident as a double homicide.
The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and booked into Los Angeles County jail on suspicion of their murders.
He was taken into custody at 9:15 PM and booked at 5:04 AM, according to the Los Angeles Times.
A court appearance is expected, with Nick reportedly planning to enter an insanity plea.
Their bodies were discovered by their daughter, Romy, who informed police that her brother, Nick, lived with their parents and warned officers he was "dangerous" and should be considered a suspect.
Death certificates confirm brutal cause of death
TMZ obtained the couple's death certificates from the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, offering a chilling official confirmation of what was already known publicly: both Rob and Michele died from "multiple sharp force injuries."
The certificates go further, describing how those fatal injuries occurred - "with knife, by another" - reinforcing the violent nature of their deaths.
Both Rob and Michele have since been cremated.
The documents, though expected, carry a heavy emotional weight for the Reiner family and all those who knew the couple personally or professionally.
A daughter’s heartbreak and tributes from friends
Rob’s eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, spoke out publicly following the loss of her father and stepmother.
Appearing on NBC News with Chloe Melas, the actress said: "I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock."
Tracy was adopted by Rob Reiner during his marriage to Penny Marshall and is the biological daughter of Michael Henry. She's known for her roles in A League of Their Own, Die Hard, and Apollo 13.
As news spread, tributes poured in from Hollywood and political figures alike.
California Governor Gavin Newsom called Reiner a "big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love," while longtime friends Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis expressed their devastation in a joint statement.
The couple said they were "numb, sad and shocked" by "the violent, tragic deaths" of their close friends.
"Our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them," they said.
"There will be plenty of time later to discuss the creative lives we shared and the great political and social impact they both had on the entertainment industry, early childhood development, the fight for gay marriage and their global care for a world in crisis.
"We have lost great friends. Please give us time to grieve."
