Michael Bolton’s daughters have shared an encouraging update on the singer’s health as he continues his fight against glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.
The 72-year-old Grammy-winning artist revealed last year that he was diagnosed with the disease in December 2023 after undergoing emergency surgery. Doctors were able to remove the tumor entirely during the operation.
A challenging year of treatment and recovery
Bolton later required a second brain surgery in January 2024 due to an infection.
He completed radiation and chemotherapy in October and now undergoes MRI scans every two months to monitor for any signs of recurrence, which is common with glioblastoma.
In a recent interview with AARP, Bolton’s daughters Isa, Holly and Taryn (who have taken on the role of his primary caregivers) spoke openly about how he is doing now.
“We’re proud and happy to update anyone who has been interested in following our dad’s journey that he is in very good spirits and very good health,” Isa said.
She acknowledged that the road hasn’t been easy.
“He has a lot of challenges, and we do have great days and some tough days, but in general, he’s very strong,” she explained, adding that his mobility and cognitive abilities have remained strong.
Michael Bolton reflects on family and gratitude
In an email to AARP, Bolton said he has been feeling “deeply grateful” as he focuses on time with his loved ones, including his daughters and six grandchildren.
“This past year has tested me in ways I never imagined,” he wrote.
“But it’s also made me more aware of the moments that fill life with meaning; sharing meals with my family, hearing my grandkids laugh, and stepping outside on a beautiful day and just taking it in.”
Bolton shares Isa, 50, Holly, 48, and Taryn, 46, with his ex-wife Maureen McGuire.
How Bolton’s daughters support his recovery
According to AARP, each of Bolton’s daughters has taken on significant caregiving responsibilities, from helping with daily needs to coordinating medical appointments and professional matters.
Taryn lives full-time with Bolton in his longtime Westport, Connecticut, home along with her daughters.
Isa spends several days a week there, often bringing her sons, while Holly travels from California monthly to assist with hands-on care.
Bolton said his daughters’ presence has been invaluable.
“They ground me on the harder days and bring laughter on the lighter ones,” he shared.
“They remind me of who I am and what’s worth fighting for.”
Adjusting to life after surgery
Isa also opened up about the emotional challenges the family faced, including a temporary personality change Bolton experienced following surgery.
She recalled her young son once admitting he was frightened by the changes.
She noted that with time, yoga and physical therapy, Bolton returned to his familiar sense of humor.
“Those changes can be alarming, especially for children, and that needs to be recognized,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Isa said caregiving has allowed her to redefine her relationship with her father in a meaningful way.
Bolton also expressed appreciation for the messages he has received from fans throughout his cancer journey.
“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart,” he wrote.
“Your messages, prayers and kindness have reached me in moments when I needed them most. They remind me that none of us face life’s challenges alone.”
